Perhaps it's a matter of opposites, but Dan's drawn to those people. He thinks of himself as a mediating force, someone to pump the brakes on cruel ideas and misplaced priorities. A public service to spend on time around people that make Dan feel dirty if he can occasionally be the angel on their shoulder, and he refuses to admit how presumptuous that is.
