Wash teaches him and is a surprisingly good teacher for someone so annoyed with the situation. Due to the memory block he doesn't remember his time training Tucker or helping Caboose work through certain things. But the skills are still there even if he can't remember where he got them from.
He goes into gun safety, into not keeping your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot, pointing it in a safe direction when not under attack, aiming, dealing with recoil, loading, unloading, safety on, safety off, how to unjam it if it gets jammed, etc etc.
He doesn't just show him, he shows him and also talks him through doing it on his own.
The whole time he sounds very annoyed, but the annoyance isn't really at Matthew.
When Wash is finished, he says archly, "There. Now maybe you won't shoot any teammates." A pause. "Or yourself."
