It is recommended you check out the following links first for info on the rig, rig conditions, game mechanics, and the intro and slideshow your characters would have to endure that takes place chronologically before the Test Drive Meme:

Welcome/Arrival  | Rig Weather & Hazards | Rig Setting Page | Game Mechanics

SCENARIO #1 - MOVE-IN DAY!

After the bewildering and unpleasant onboarding process, you've finally been unleashed on the rig. (Well. To places you're allowed to go on the rig.) It's time to get acquainted with your new surroundings, process some of All Of That™, and meet your fellow captives - err, coworkers!

a) A BIT OF A MESS
Perhaps you're hungry? The mess hall food isn't amazing, but it does the job. Characters that have higher metabolic needs than your average human might be left feeling a little hungry, though. The worst part is actually the electronic sliding door: a small sign helpfully informs you that if you want inside, you need to smile for the camera! In addition to being patronizing, this may be a problem for characters who refuse to play ball, or characters with sufficiently nonhuman faces the door sensor can't read them. Remember, if then company doesn't see people like you, it's not discriminatory -- it's just indifferent! And that isn't legally actionable!

b) GOING NOWHERE FAST
The rig's elevators are a little off-kilter today. Overhead announcements mention this, but downplay the severity and are easy to miss -- which means you and your threadmate are stuck in here, somewhere between the fifth and sixth floor. You can complain into the emergency intercomm, but it might take from a few minutes up to an hour before the elevator gets rolling again. How do you pass the time?

c) SHOULD'VE TAKEN THAT LEFT TURN
You're really just trying to get somewhere else on the rig, but you've gotten hopelessly lost. Oh well, at least you're not alone! Did you run into your threadmate here? Did you lead them astray? Are they at fault? Even worse, are you somewhere full of AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY signs, mysterious equipment, and a worrying number of security cameras?

d) NEED A HAND?
You've been assigned a room and some relatively spare possessions to put in it. Unfortunately, it seems that the staff assigned to help move in new hires are all busy at the moment. Unless you want to wait around, you're going to need to lug and assemble your new assigned foldable den furniture yourself. Do you team up with another newbie? Do you try it alone and find yourself needing help? Do you come to the rescue of someone else who did that?

e) SPECIAL DELIVERY
Somebody in processing decided to give you two a quick little errand: you're supposed to take a couple boxes of files up to the executive deck. Unfortunately, a skeptical security staffer is giving you a hard time on your way there, on account of your funny-looking face, insufficient ID or sketchy-looking package. How do you deal with this and accomplish your task?

f) BLOW OFF STEAM
You're likely still a bit sore from Jorgmund fitting you with the nanochain, but you were promised a gym and you are going to use that gym, dammit. It looks like you're not alone in deciding to try out the training area. Do you train together? Spar to let some frustration out? Or are you gonna argue about whose turn it is on which piece of equipment and resent your lost solitude? You'll also find you have to contend with the communal showers when you're done.

g) NO REST FOR THE WEARY
It's the middle of the night on the rig. You're displaced from home, it's not very warm, your door doesn't shut because privacy is a "privilege" nobody has earned yet, and occasional mysterious clanging noises ring through the rig. You can't sleep, not yet, and perhaps you're not the only insomniac wandering the crew deck?

SCENARIO #2 - YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO PANIC

Around dawn on the morning of Day Two, something goes wrong. (Wrong-er?) You awake to the sound of alarms, and a voice over the speakers telling you NOT TO PANIC! A Stuff storm has caused a brief and contained leak onto Piper 90. You may encounter strange sights or sounds. Any anomalies should be reported immediately to rig security. Thank you for your cooperation!

The nature of the problem isn't immediately clear, but over the next handful of hours you find yourself embroiled in a bizarre fracas: a Stuff leak has caused numerous inanimate objects on the rig to come to life. Furniture and appliances small and large are roaming the decks. Some of them are docile, but others are aggressive (or just troublesome due to their size). Some examples:
  • A rogue photocopier spewing paper and ink
  • A mahogany conference table with old clawed feet and a brand new gaping jaw
  • A water cooler that scuttles the halls, squirting people with jets in varying temperatures
  • Small office supplies like pencils and paperclips that swarm in large numbers
  • Dressers and drawers that spit their contents at high velocity
  • A room's worth of folding chairs that hunt as a pack
  • An emergency fire hose that attempts to ensnare crew members in its coils
  • The angriest coffee pot you have ever seen
The objects can be dangerous, but are more strange, troublesome, and determined than deadly. If a foe seems to be incapacitated or "plays dead," even the aggressive conference table or hose will leave them with bruises and move on. Crew members who get in over their heads will be bailed out by security personnel as the incident dies down. Jorgmund staff stresses that the leak has been contained (so no new anomalies will appear), but after the initial surprise it's everyone's job to help hunt down and dispose of the Stuff-altered... stuff. It's gonna be a long morning, and you haven't even been properly briefed yet!

h) GOOD MORNING, PIPER 90
Rise and shine! There are alarms going off, announcements blaring, and people are scrambling around trying to figure out what's going on. You're one of them. Freak out? Spring into action? Team up with someone to shake down a staffer for more details? Run into someone new, perhaps literally?

i) INTERIOR WRECKORATING
You've been ambushed by an animate object that seems to have it in for you, or you've heard the shouts of someone who has and come running to help. What's ruining your morning now, and what are you going to do about it?

j) ON THE RUN
The folding chairs from Presentation Room B operate as a unit, harrying their prey through the halls with much scrambling of legs and flapping of seats. They're after you, at the moment. Can you escape, or perhaps lead them into a trap? Or do you stand your ground?

k) HERE'S THE PLAN
You and your threadmate have found somewhere secure (for now) and are deciding how to deal with a larger enemy. Are you hunting it, or is it hunting you? Are you planning to take it out of commission, or just how to get away from it? Or are you just gonna hide here and lay low until this is over?

l) PROP HUNT
Things are getting back under control, thankfully. Large disturbances have been disposed of, but that leaves the little things like elusive chains of paperclips, a small but vicious stapler, pens and markers that write rude words on walls, and utensils from the mess hall. These anomalies are stealthier, but must still be dealt with, and it's up to you to flush them out.

m) CLEAN UP IN AISLE EVERYTHING
The chaos has passed, and now you've been instructed to clean up a mess. Ink or loose paper from the copier, coffee from the rampaging pot, mopping up after a water cooler, scrubbing marker off a wall, etc. You might get roped into contending with the Yuck Puddle, which is a permanent fixture and not a new development, but someone's always contending with the Yuck Puddle.

OOC DETAILS

Feel free to play around with powers. If your character has powers from canon you want to play around with, go for it. If you'd like to test out possibilities for game powers, also go for it. Feel free to change it up from thread to thread if you need to. This can be handwaved as exposure to Stuff making characters' powers shift a few times before settling.

Potential players may use test drive threads as their log samples. However, at least one post in their thread must fit the requirements for apps, both in length (200 words) and in quality. If you do plan on using a thread as a sample, please make sure the writing throughout your threads is a good example of your writing skills and has some solid examples of the character's voice.

Players can eventually count TDMs towards AC. They can only count towards comment-based AC proofs.

Potential players can opt to keep these threads as game canon when they app in, or start over fresh, based on preference. The Stuff bringing them to the game universe can fog their memories, if players don't want their character to remember TDM threads when introing into the game.

The game is invite-only. Players without invites are allowed to tdm since some of them may know someone in game to ask for one, and since some people enjoy TDMs just for fun in games they don't plan to app into. But an invite is required during the apping process.

The game is at a starting cap at 30 players. Right now the current number of invitees is likely to not exceed the game's 30 slots, but if we go a few over they will still be allowed to app during this first round. Future apps will be rolling apps and will have a wait queue if the cap has been exceeded.

The first game round will be apps only, no reserves. Apps open: Sat 4/11/20. Game start: Fri 4/17/20.

Course he still looked good, damn man could wear a burlap sack and still catch her eye, mostly her own fault she figured. Had been since day one.

But that flinch, that fraction of an expression which woulda slid right on by most folks, she caught it. Her brow furrowed but before she could even ask he started talking. What he had to say wasn't exactly good news. Seemed they were from different times, well that wasn't exactly a first for either of them, but it also seemed to be a time he wasn't exactly too fond of.

"Ah'm guessin' a lot's changed in a year or two." She folded arms over herself and took a step back, already closing herself off. They'd been through this song and dance before and it seemed to come back around to them over and over. The details were all that ever changed. "How bad is it? Ah mean don't seem like it kin hurt ta know if we're stuck here an all."

"You ain't gonna get it outta me dat easy." A raised eyebrow as he settles back into his more easygoing nature. Sure, it wasn't great that she wasn't from the same time. But it made some things easier. "We got enough friends 'tween us dat don' come from our time to know how much paradoxes suck."

He stepped forward, pulling the arm of the jumpsuit down over his hand so he could tip her face back toward his. "'Sides. Ain't you de one who turned 'way from Destiny's Diaries 'cause you didn' want t'ings to be set in stone?"

"Ain't nuthin bout you is easy, sugah." Not a damned thing. But that never made it easier to not be with him. Maybe she enjoyed the challenge or maybe it was because neither of them exactly knew what to do with 'easy.' But he was right, Bishop had been pretty clear bout it, and heck they musta known half a dozen folks who came and went like time was water, so it shouldn't surprise her. Remy being the responsible one though, that was new. Well newer. Maybe a lot had changed.

"Yer a rat for using that against me, but ah can't argue it. Ah don' want my choices being made because it's what someone said ah was gonna do." No matter how she might struggle against the idea, she knew that the one thing that had always hurt deep down was the idea that she wasn't in control. It's what made her dangerous, so she held on to that idea tooth and nail.

"So ah guess that means we gotta figure all this out. Again." It'd be easier if her inclination wasn't to lean into that hand, but she was only half sure it was safe. Knowin Remy he'd throw some line about being worth the risk.

"Ain't nothin' 'bout US has ever been easy." It was the truth and nothing but. Much as some of their teammates might be surprised to hear that. But he was trying to be better about the lies.

Well. About some of the lies. Some couldn't be helped.

"Maybe so, chère, but I only got two words t' say 'bout dat." His eyes glint with internal light. "Trust me."

He'd absolutely say it was worth the risk if it was only his own skin he was thinking about. But with the time difference between them and the fact that she's never really taken well to power loss and her own powers going haywire. Better not to risk it.

Yet.

I catch your drift.

[ He's raising valid points, after all. It doesn't do any good denying that they're valid points. As much as they are... not part and parcel with Steven's modus operandi.

He's always been the one who believes. Anyone can change, anyone can create change, the whole nine yards. There can be a point where it all stops, everyone moves on, and no one is left miserable by compromise. If he backtracks on that now after everything, he's not exactly doing his best Steven Universe.

Can he blame someone else who got pulled into this for not having the good luck he's had in the past? No. ]

It's a little glass-half-empty. And I'd say we could work on building a more positive outlook if you want, since I'm pretty used to keeping it glass-half-full-ful? [ That's a term, right. ] But you're probably not wrong to be careful. Any problem that opens with a shock collar is gonna be in the weeds for a while. Not, uh. Not really starting everyone off on the right foot, huh?

Holy shit! That actually worked! Well, kind of worked. He’s honestly not sure if he’s impressed or disappointed by how the guy manages to catch himself. It wasn't the most graceful tumble, but hey, he wasn't on the floor, it was definitely a better save than Jack could have pulled off. It earns him an impressed whistle but combined with his mischievous smirk he’s not making the task of gauging his sincerity any easier.

“Nice catch.” He adds, crossing his arms over his chest. It’s a little shocking that the guy’s taking it so well, something he should probably be more thankful for. In retrospect ticking off a guy who was that fast and coordinated, especially when he was still in ill-fitting skates and would have been pretty easy to catch, probably wasn’t his best idea.

He wasn't wrong. Most girls wished for a knight in shining armor, Rogue got a cajun in beat-up leather on a motorcycle. But he was every bit of what she wanted, no matter how many times she or someone else tried to tell her otherwise. Remy was a good man in his heart, she knew. She knew because she'd seen it, felt it in him. The timing hadn't been great, and his own feeling of self-loathing had made it a pretty disappointing goodbye ut they'd gotten through that.

Heck, they'd been through more than any two people could ever expect to see and still hadn't come out the other side hatin each other, that said something right?

He asked her to trust him, and that was all he needed to say. "Ah do Remy, with all my heart ah trust you." It was herself she worried about, and hurting him was the last thing she wanted. Considering that they had just started getting the hang of things without her power bein a problem back home.

[When Steven makes an offer to help him work on building a more positive outlook Jack can’t help a little snort of a laugh, for a moment assuming, incorrectly, that he was joking, but when he keeps going and it becomes apparent he’s serious Jack just looks at him with a mix of amusement and confused wonder. How was this kid even for real?]

Yeah, not a great first impression. Not the worst, but definitely up there. They could really stand to work more on their public relations and their recruitment slash interview process. Maybe you could give them some tips for working on their positivity.

[For his trouble Steven gets a playful elbow in the arm and a bitter little snicker, before Jack circles back to the offer to help him, shifting the box of files in his arms as he literally shrugs off the offer.]

Personally, I’m good with being glass-half-empty. The outlook of ‘expect the worst and hope for the best’ has served me well. I keep my expectations low and get to be pleasantly surprised when things don’t turn out as bad as they could have. It’s done a decent job of keeping me alive...I gotta ask though, what kind of situations have you had to deal with that you can look at this one and see a happy outcome?...I mean, aside from getting shot out into space?

They'd come a long way since those early days. Hell, they'd come a long way since Antarctica. And Remy still might not think of himself as a good man (there WAS that whole 'king of thieves' thing going on), but he knew he was a better man with her at his side than he was alone.

"Bon." He leaned up, planting a kiss just above the white in her hair. A protected spot he tended to use because she deserved to be kissed as a comfort as well. Just needed to be more careful about where. "Dis place can't t'row more at us dan we can handle. Not after all de stuff we've been t'rough."
just_rogue: (face to face)

[personal profile] just_rogue 2020-05-10 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Rogue sometimes felt like they were spinnin their wheels but if they were at least they always came back to each other. They'd seen friends come and go and seen relationships grow and falter and somehow they always circled back to each other. She liked to think they were meant to be together, but one wouldn't be wrong if they accused her of having a romantic streak.

Speaking os streaks that kiss had her sigh and relax, the effect was almost like magic, she softened and leaned in to wrap covered arms around him and tuck her face against his clothes shoulder. It was a habit they'd learned over the years, how to have safe, meaningful contact, and right now she needed it. Even if he wasn't from the same time she was, he was still Remy LeBeau and that meant he was a source of strength and comfort. "Reckon yer right about that, ain much we haven't seen in some way, shape or form over the years." She gave him a gentle squeeze. "Does it make me greedy ta say ah'm glad yer here?"
kingofneworleans: (Default)

[personal profile] kingofneworleans 2020-05-10 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd always been tactile, so her leaning in and hugging him was met with an immediate relaxation and him wrapping his arms around her. Carefully, but only because his hands were uncovered.

The lack of gloves was going to be really, really annoying. Really, really quickly.

"Only if it makes me greedy, too," he admitted, hugging her a bit tighter. "But I ain't never been one to deny bein' greedy."
just_rogue: (tee hee)

[personal profile] just_rogue 2020-05-11 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
She might be harmless, or she might not. She was trying to keep everything under control, but they warned her upfront things would be different here. Maybe the effects weren't so bad on those she touched either, but she wasn't in a rush to try just yet, not when they had something at least.

It felt good holding on like this, all her weariness came though now and she felt like she hadn't slept in weeks. Funny how she couldn't even make her eyes close or her body lay still just a few minutes earlier. Now all she wanted to do was curl up and rest, preferably next to a tall red-eyed fella, but only if there was a way to do that and known she wasn't gonna hurt him.

"So we're both greedy." She shrugged a little. "Ah kin live with it." Rogue sighed softly against him. "Ah think this place'll be ok now. If you're here we can figure it out." Like they always had in the past.
kingofneworleans: (Oh Really?)

[personal profile] kingofneworleans 2020-05-11 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
"We al'ays do." Because they'd always worked well as a team, no matter what else was going wrong in their lives. It was sometimes a saving grace, sometimes hurting more than anything else. But they trusted each other that far, at least. Even when trust could be an issue in other parts of their lives.

He turned his head, laying his cheek against her hair. "I don' know 'bout you, but I'm gettin' a mite exhausted." He'd been tired when he got here. Dealing with the Guilds AND teenagers would do that to anybody. "How 'bout we find a place to hole up an' get some rest?"

Even if they couldn't sleep next to each other, they could sleep in the same room. It would have to be enough until there was a chance to experiment with Rogue's powers, see where her limits were at. Which might not be for a while.
just_rogue: (hard choices)

[personal profile] just_rogue 2020-05-11 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Even in the worst of times, they had each other's back, when she was drowning in feelings and thoughts not her own in Antarctica, she still got him out when the place was going up. She'll never feel right about how that ended, but it was years ago and they'd seen so much since then.

"Sounds like you been takin up mind readin' LeBeau. Ah was jus thinkin' the same thing." And just knowing he was near was comfort, having each other gave her a sense of hope and normalcy when everything else was topsy turvy.

She pulled back and let her gloved hand slip into his, fingers finding their way out of habit to twine with his. "Mah room's just down this way, ain't got much but ah'm not sure anywhere round these parts does."
kingofneworleans: (Default)

[personal profile] kingofneworleans 2020-05-11 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That got one of his real laughs as he twined his fingers with hers. Comfortable. "Not readin' minds, chère. Jus' readin' you." He'd always been good at reading people, but he'd learned to pay special attention to Rogue. It always came in useful when he was trying to see just how far he could push things, how much closer he could get without being thrown out of her space.

"Non, we don'." He held up his free hand, showing the lack of gloves that she had to have noticed by now. "Dey got my trench an' my gloves. An' pretty much all my cards." Which doesn't make him less dangerous, really. After all, if he can pick it up and throw it, it can be a weapon. Hell, sometimes it can be a weapon even if he can't pick it up. Had done that a few times, too.
just_rogue: (neutral)

[personal profile] just_rogue 2020-05-11 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiled, maybe it was nice to hear that he paid that level of attention to her. Not like he had any shortage of admirers, it made her feel special to have that focus. "Well whatever it is ya do, yer right about feeling tired." And wanting company.

"Ah think what ah did find here makes up for a lot." She gave his hand a squeeze. "But it is a shame ta not be able ta see ya in you're normal clothes, always did look handsome." She stepped forward and gave him a tug to urge him along, her room was just down the hall. They'd figure it out, they always did.

He snorted at that, grinning. "T'ink I've changed uniform 'bout two or three times since Australia." Easier to think of it that way. "You know us. A'ays changin' uniforms like we do bat'water." He wasn't QUITE as bad as some of their teammates. The old magenta and blue had been a staple for a lot of years, after all.

"De new one's still got a high neck, but I ditched de head piece." For now. It always seemed to find its way back to his uniforms, though.

"Ah like the classics mahself, but that might have something ta do with making sure people know who they are sidin up next to and don't get careless." Which was a fair point, someone bumps into Rem it wasn't necessarily going to hurt either of them, but with Rogue it could be bad for both.

"Always thought it was a pitty ta hide that pretty face, but ah s'pose there can be good reasons too." Knowing what as safe to touch and what wasn't for starters. Still like he said, they always found a way.

He grinned at her. "Ah, but you look good in de classics, so I am entirely behind that."

Which had nothing to do with the fact that they all tended to wear tight outfits but she only rarely had something that went down far enough to keep him from entirely enjoying her uniforms.

"Sometimes, I wonder why that's even a thing with the Guild, but even that's changing. On the other hand, the headpieces are so common for us, it still feels pretty weird not to have it." Which meant he'd go back to it sooner or later. He always did.

"Aaah!" Nora and dignity don't have more than a nodding acquaintance at the best of times, so plowing face-first into the mat when Loken's foot connects with her leg is neither unfamiliar nor particularly disconcerting for her. Her Aura keeps her from getting an embarrassing friction burn on her forehead, anyway.

So yeah, that's definitely a fall. She's muttering something disgruntled-sounding about how Grimm don't feint.
greyerrant: (Dynamic entry)

[personal profile] greyerrant 2020-05-12 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
"What's a Grimm?" Loken asks, even as he resets his stance for another engagement.

[personal profile] valkywhee 2020-05-12 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nora grabs her hammer and rises in a single motion much more graceful than her descent. She might go down, but never once has she stayed down.

"The Creatures of Grimm," she says, returning to her own ready stance, well outside Loken's reach. She hopes. Maybe he can teleport or something. "Those monsters I said I fight. Most of them aren't any smarter than animals."
greyerrant: (helmet)

[personal profile] greyerrant 2020-05-12 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
"I see. Well, I can teach you to fight sentients. If that is something you want." He pauses, shifting his footing in response to her own ready stance, and slowly begins circling. "I think it will be something you need, here."

[personal profile] valkywhee 2020-05-12 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Having experienced firsthand how quickly Loken moves, Nora has a feeling she's not winning this bout, but like hell is she forfeiting. Note to self: don't drop your weapon this time.

"It's shaping up to be something I need back home, too." A depressing thought, but it's not just humanity versus the Grimm anymore. It probably never was, she guesses. "Tournament fighting just isn't the same."

"Sweet talker." Said with a pleased smile.

"Best keep the coat though, gives ya a devil may care kinda look. Always suited ya." And it was a layer of protection, and it had pockets. Better than wearing a bunch a belts with pouches that could get in the way and always seemed to press in the small of your back.

Rogue lead him further down the hall until they came to her room, she paused at the door. "Ah guess this is where ah invite ya in, sorry ah don't have a nightcap for ya."
